Huayhuash Adventure Trek in 11 Days: The classic route

The Huayhuash Trek, recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful treks, captivates adventurers with its majestic snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lagoons, and unparalleled Andean landscapes.

 

This 10-day journey, plus an additional day for acclimatization, offers an unforgettable adventure through one of the most remote and breathtaking regions in Peru. With each step, trekkers are immersed in awe-inspiring natural beauty, from towering mountains to serene alpine lakes, making the Huayhuash Trek a once-in-a-lifetime experience for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Day One in Huaraz

We pick you up at the bus agency or directly at the hostel, with private transportation, then you settle into the hostel while we wait for you in the kitchen with breakfast and a coca tea for the altitude.

Acclimatization tour

Day One in Huaraz

Huayhuash Day 1: Huaraz (3100m) – Cuartelhuain Camp site (4180m)

Leaving Huaraz at 9am, we will arrive at the first campsite at 3pm after a lunch stop in Chiquian. There is no hiking on the first day. Once at the camp, you will have time to relax and enjoy the view of Rondoy mountain and the valley, where there are often spectacular sunsets.

 

Huayhuash Day 1: Huaraz (3100m) – Cuartelhuain Camp site (4180m)

Day 2: Cuartelhuain (4180m) – Cacananpunta Pass (4695m) – Janca Camp site (4225m)

The second day will start early to begin the 2.5-hour hike up to the first pass at 4,695m. We will then descend to 4,225m to reach the second campsite at Janca. It is possible to visit Mitucocha lake.

 

Day 2: Cuartelhuain (4180m) – Cacananpunta Pass (4695m) – Janca Camp site (4225m)

Day 3: Janca camp site (4225m) - Alcaycocha pass (4740m) - Carhuacocha camp site (4138m)

7.5 km from Janca to Carhuacocha, then continuing through Alcaycocha Pass where we’ll enjoy magnificent views of the snowcapped peaks: Carnicero, Yerupaja Grande, Yerupaja Chico, and Jirishanca. We then head to Carhuacocha camp, where we’ll spend the night facing Yerupaja Grande, Peru’s second-highest mountain (6,635m), Yerupaja Chico, and Jirishanca.

Day 3: Janca camp site (4225m) - Alcaycocha pass (4740m) - Carhuacocha camp site (4138m)

Day 4: Carhuacocha (4138m) – Siula Pass (4846m) – Huayhuash Camp site (4350m)

7 km from Carhuacocha to the viewpoint of the three turquoise lakes: Gangrajancacocha, Siulacocha, and Quesillacocha. Then, we continue through Siula Pass, where there are panoramic views, and descend 7 km to Huayhuash campsite.

 

Day 4: Carhuacocha (4138m) – Siula Pass (4846m) – Huayhuash Camp site (4350m)

Day 5: Huayhuash (4350m) – Portachuelo of Huayhuash (4750m) – Viconga hot spring (4350m)

We will hike 11 km from the Huayhuash camp to the hot springs, passing through the Huayhuash Portachuelo pass where we will see the Raura mountain range and Viconga lake. We will then arrive to enjoy the relaxing hot springs after the day of hiking.

 

Day 5: Huayhuash (4350m) – Portachuelo of Huayhuash (4750m) – Viconga hot spring (4350m)

Day 6: Viconga hot spring (4350m) – Cuyoc pass (4950m) – Cuyoc Elephante camp site (4500m)

We will hike 7.5 km, with an altitude difference of approximately 650 meters, taking around 5 to 6 hours. From the Cuyoc pass, we will see a large part of the Huayhuash and Raura mountain ranges, and we will camp in the Pampas Elephant.

Day 6: Viconga hot spring (4350m) – Cuyoc pass (4950m) – Cuyoc Elephante camp site (4500m)

Day 7: Cuyoc camp site (4350m) – Santa rosa pass (5079m) – Cutatambo camp (4224m)

From Cuyoc camp or Elephant Pampa, we will go up to Santa Rosa pass, where we will appreciate one of the best views of Huayhuash. Afterward, we will descend to Jurau lake and the Cutatambo campsite.

 

Day 7: Cuyoc camp site (4350m) – Santa rosa pass (5079m) – Cutatambo camp (4224m)

Day 8: Cutatambo camp (4224m) – Santa rosa and Sarapococha lake – Siula base camp – Huallapa Village (3490m)

We will also start early at 6:30 am, having breakfast while the equipment is prepared for the next camp. We will visit Santa Rosa and Sarapococha lake, and we will see the Siula base camp. Then, we will descend to Huallapa Village where we will camp, and you can buy snacks.

 

Day 8: Cutatambo camp (4224m) – Santa rosa and Sarapococha lake – Siula base camp – Huallapa Village (3490m)

Day 9: Huayllapa (3490m) – Paso Tapush (4770m) – Gashpapampa (4570m)

We get up early and have breakfast while the equipment is prepared to be transferred to the next camp. This day, we will leave Huayllapa Village and ascend towards the Tapush pass. The hiking time will be approximately 7 hours, and we will camp at Gashpapampa (4,570m).

Day 9: Huayllapa (3490m) – Paso Tapush (4770m) – Gashpapampa (4570m)

Day 10: Gashpapampa (4570m) – Paso Punta Llaucha (4880m) – Jahuacocha lake (4100m)

We will start early at 6:30 am, have breakfast while the equipment is prepared for the next camp, and then begin the hike. We will walk for about 7 hours. This day will be very important because we will cross the Llaucha Pass, and we will have a panoramic view of the Jahuacocha and Solteracocha Lakes, where our next camp will also be.

 

Day 10: Gashpapampa (4570m) – Paso Punta Llaucha (4880m) – Jahuacocha lake (4100m)

Day 11: Jahuacocha lake (4100m) – Llamac (3450m) – Huaraz (3100m)

We will start early, get things ready while having breakfast, and then begin the walk to Llamac village, which will take approximately 6 hours. There, the car will be waiting for us to return. It will be a 4.5-hour trip with private transportation to Huaraz.

Optional: Jahuacocha (4100m) – Rondoy Pass (4750m) – Rondoy camp site (4100m) – Huaraz (3100m)

 

Day 11: Jahuacocha lake (4100m) – Llamac (3450m) – Huaraz (3100m)
